Baiae

Baiae was an ancient Roman resort town on the northwest shore of the Gulf of Naples, now within the comune of Bacoli. [1] It flourished as a fashionable retreat from the late Republic onward, when wealthy Romans favored it over Capri, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. [1] Opulent villas were built from 100 BC, and emperors later constructed grand estates here, seemingly competing with their predecessors. [1] The city became notorious for its hedonistic offerings and persistent rumors of corruption and scandal. [1]
