Licata

An ancient settlement on the south coast of Sicily at the mouth of the Salso River, with occupation from the Bronze Age through the Roman period. Monte Petrulla contains a monumental necropolis of about one hundred artificial cave graves from the 2nd millennium BC. Phoenicians traded here between the 12th and 8th centuries BC, as evidenced by Phoenician, Iberian, and Libyan inscriptions at Stagnone Pontillo. On Monte Sant'Angelo, remains of a Greek city from the 4th century BC survive, including a marble statue possibly depicting Demeter. The town of Phintias, founded around 282 BC, represents the last Greek colonial foundation in Sicily.
