Selinunte Archaeological Park

Selinunte was a prosperous ancient Greek colony on the southwestern coast of Sicily, founded around 628 BC by settlers from Megara Hyblaea. At its peak before 409 BC, the city may have housed 30,000 inhabitants. Its ruins now form Europe's largest archaeological park at approximately 270 hectares. The site contains multiple Doric temples, including the partially reconstructed Temple E dedicated to Hera and the massive unfinished Temple G, one of the largest Greek temples ever attempted. The city was devastated by Carthaginian forces in 409 BC, with 16,000 citizens killed and 5,000 taken prisoner.
