A palatial Roman residence in Pompeii formed by merging two Samnite-period structures (c. 3rd century BC), more correctly known as the House of Octavius Quartio after its true owner, identified by a bronze seal found during excavation. Excavated 1916-1921 by Vittorio Spinazzola, it features extensive gardens with two perpendicular water channels (euripi) and a summer biclinium bearing "Lucius pinxit" -- the only known artist's signature in Pompeii. Wall paintings in room 'h' depict scenes of Achilles and the Iliad. The house suffered Allied bomb damage in 1943.
