Aeclanum

An ancient Samnite and Roman town on the Via Appia in southern Italy, about 25 km east of Beneventum near modern Mirabella Eclano. Originally a principal settlement of the Hirpini tribe, it was sacked by Sulla in 89 BC and elevated to a Roman colony under Hadrian in 120 AD. Excavations revealed a macellum, early Christian church, Roman baths preserved several metres high, and a large imperial marble statue likely of Marcus Aurelius. The city suffered an earthquake in 346 AD and burial under the Vesuvian eruption of 472 AD. Now an archaeological park.
