Arch of Trajan, Benevento

Erected 114-118 AD to celebrate Emperor Trajan's Dacian victories and the inauguration of the Via Traiana linking Benevento to Brindisi. The arch stands 15.6 m high and 8.6 m wide, clad in Parian marble over limestone using opus quadratum. Its reliefs depict Trajan's triumphal procession, the alimenta welfare program for children, and personifications of Victory and the Danube. Incorporated into Lombard city walls as the Porta Aurea, it remains one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches.
