Compsa

Compsa was an ancient Hirpini city strategically positioned on a ridge 609 m above sea level near the sources of the Aufidus River, on the boundary of Lucania and not far from Apulia [1]. The settlement was betrayed to Hannibal in 216 BC after the defeat of Cannae, but Roman forces recaptured it two years later [1]. In 89 BC, General Sulla probably occupied the city during the Social War [1]. The site later became famous as the location where Titus Annius Milo died in 48 BC [1]. During the imperial era, Compsa achieved municipal status.
