Lycosura

Lycosura was an ancient city in the Parrhasia region of south Arcadia, claimed by Pausanias to be the oldest city in the world, though archaeological evidence only confirms its existence from the 4th century BCE [1]. The site's primary significance is the Sanctuary of Despoina, which housed a colossal sculptural group created by Damophon of Messene, depicting Despoina and Demeter seated on a throne, flanked by Artemis and the Titan Anytos, all carved from Pentelic marble in the acrolithic technique [1]. Remains of a stoa, altars, and other structures have been excavated at the site.
