Arènes de Lutèce

A 1st-century AD Gallo-Roman amphitheatre in Paris, one of the city's most important ancient remains alongside the Thermes de Cluny. Its hybrid design combined a 41 m stage with terraced seating surrounding more than half the arena, accommodating up to 15,000 spectators for gladiatorial combats and theatrical performances. Rediscovered in the 1860s during Rue Monge construction, the arena was saved from demolition through a campaign led by Victor Hugo. Opened as a public park in 1896, it now hosts petanque and picnics in the 5th arrondissement.
