Oppidum d'Altimurium

The Oppidum d'Altimurium is an ancient Gallo-Roman hill-town near Murviel-les-Montpellier, France, founded in the 2nd century BC. Covering about 20 hectares at 190m altitude, it is one of the largest oppida in the Languedoc region, comparable to Enserune and Ambrussum. The site was protected by a 1st-century BC wall nearly 2 km long and divided into an upper and lower town. Listed as a monument historique since 1896, it was first excavated in the mid-19th century by Agenor Azema de Montgravier. An archaeological museum in Murviel-les-Montpellier displays artifacts from the site.
