Maison Carré

The Maison Carree in Nimes, southern France, is one of the best-preserved Roman temples in the world. Construction began around 16 BC, and the temple was dedicated in the early 1st century AD to Gaius and Lucius Caesar, grandsons and adopted heirs of Augustus. The hexastyle pseudoperipteral temple features Corinthian columns and measures 26.42 m by 13.54 m on a podium approximately 2.85 m high. It survived through continuous reuse as a church, then a stable, and later a museum. In September 2023, the Maison Carree was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
