Built when the city was called Caesarodunum, the enormous elliptical structure measured approximately 122 by 94 metres[1]. It is classified as a "primitive" amphitheatre[1]. Unlike the Colosseum, it was built primarily of earth moved into a bowl shape, with spectators on grassy slopes; masonry was limited to vomitoria and retaining walls[1].
