Wraxall, Somerset

Wraxall is a village in North Somerset with archaeological heritage spanning multiple periods [1] [2]. Earthworks of an oval Iron Age settlement, surrounded by a bank and ditch, lie south of Manor Farm [1] [3]. Excavations (1950-53) uncovered a Roman villa, and additional Roman features are scattered throughout the valley [1] [2]. The village also preserves earthworks from a deserted medieval settlement, with evidence of houses, enclosures, and possibly a watermill [1]. The name Wraxall is thought to derive from 'a nook of land frequented by buzzards' [1].
