Backwell Hillfort

An Iron Age promontory hillfort located approximately 1.8 km from Backwell in North Somerset, England. First identified in 1933, the fort had two of its three sides defended by a large ditch and bank. The local Iron Age tribes in the region included the Dobunni of north Somerset. In 1956, the site was nearly destroyed by quarrying at Stancombe Quarry, which ceased in the 1970s. Despite the damage, it is designated as a scheduled monument.
