EnglandThe Sanctuary was a late Neolithic stone and timber ceremonial monument on Overton Hill near Avebury, built around 2500 BC. Maud Cunnington's 1930 excavation revealed two concentric stone circles and five timber post rings, with the outermost stone circle measuring 138 feet in diameter. The site yielded flint tools, animal bones, human remains, and pottery, suggesting ritualistic use. Connected to Avebury's henge via the 1.5-mile West Kennet Avenue, it is now part of the Stonehenge and Avebury UNESCO World Heritage Site.
