Swanborough Tump

Swanborough Tump is an earthen mound in Manningford parish, Wiltshire, listed as a scheduled monument. Its origins are debated -- it may be a Neolithic long barrow, Early Bronze Age round barrows, or a medieval assembly mound. It served as the meeting place of the Swanborough Hundred, with the name meaning 'mound of the common men or peasants'. In 871 AD, the future King Alfred the Great met his brother King Aethelred I here to swear an oath regarding royal succession before battling the Danes. Meetings were recorded at the site as late as the 18th century.
