The Longstones

Two prehistoric standing stones known as 'Adam' and 'Eve' near Beckhampton in Avebury parish, Wiltshire. Adam, the larger stone weighing an estimated 62 tons, is the surviving component of a Neolithic cove similar to the one in Avebury's north circle. Eve likely formed part of the Beckhampton Avenue, a curving stone avenue connecting to Avebury that was long debated until archaeological investigations at the turn of the 21st century uncovered 120 metres of avenue socket holes in double rows. The cove appears aligned to the mid-winter sunrise. In 1912, Maud Cunnington re-erected Adam after it fell in 1911 and discovered a Beaker-period burial of a middle-aged man nearby.
