Newport Roman Villa

Newport Roman Villa was a Romano-British farmhouse constructed in 280 AD near Newport on the Isle of Wight [1]. The walls survive almost at their original height, built from local flint, chalk, limestone and greensand [1]. The building was roofed with massive slabs of Bembridge limestone, which required large timber supports [1]. Many roof slabs featured a distinctive shape pierced with a single hole to secure nails [1].
