Bratton Castle

Bratton Castle is a large bivallate Iron Age hillfort on Bratton Down at the western edge of the Salisbury Plain escarpment in Wiltshire, enclosing a pentagonal area of 9.3 hectares within double banks and ditches. The defenses protected a settlement of round houses, granaries, stores, and workshops. The hilltop was already significant before the fort: a Neolithic long barrow and Bronze Age round barrows predate it by some 3,000 years. The Westbury White Horse, first documented in 1742, abuts the western rampart. Excavations by Jeffrey Whitaker yielded quernstones, pottery, Roman and Saxon coins, and a large cache of probable sling stones.
