Crikvenica, on Croatia's Adriatic coast, corresponds to the ancient Roman station Ad Turres ('at the towers'), documented in the Tabula Peutingeriana as a waypoint on the road from Italy to Dalmatia. Archaeological excavations at the Igraliste site near the town's football stadium uncovered a remarkably well-preserved Roman ceramic workshop operated by Sextus Metilius Maximus, active from the late 1st century BC to the end of the 2nd century AD, producing amphorae, pottery, and architectural ceramics. A distinctive flat-bottomed amphora type, the 'Crikvenica Amphora,' a local variant of the Italian Forlimpopoli type, was identified here. The site confirms over 2,000 years of continuous settlement.
