Shipton Hill Settlement

An Iron Age defended settlement near Shipton Gorge in Dorset, England, designated as a Scheduled Monument. The hilltop site, described by 19th-century antiquarian Charles Warne as resembling "the hull of a ship inverted," features an ovate summit of about four acres with scarped defenses. Excavations have yielded Iron Age pottery sherds, hammer stones, flint flakes, scrapers, quern-stone fragments, and a slingstone hoard suggesting defensive activity. The site's classification remains debated, with scholars disagreeing on whether the hill is naturally scarped or deliberately fortified.
