Heraclea Lyncestis was an ancient Greek city in Macedon, later under Roman rule[1]. Its ruins lie 2 km south of present-day Bitola in North Macedonia[1]. In the early Christian period, the city became an important Episcopal seat and served as a strategic waypoint on the Via Egnatia, the ancient Roman road linking Byzantium with the Adriatic seaport of Dyrrachium[1]. Several bishops from Heraclea participated in ecclesiastical synods in Serdica and other regional towns[1]. The city was abandoned in the 6th century AD following devastating earthquakes and Slavic invasions[1].
