Ancient City of Pergamon

Capital of the Attalid dynasty (281-133 BC), Pergamon was a major Hellenistic intellectual center in western Turkey. Its acropolis held the famous Library of Pergamon with reportedly 200,000 scrolls, rivaling Alexandria. Key monuments include the Great Altar of Pergamon, a steep 10,000-seat theatre, and the Temple of Trajan. The word "parchment" derives from Pergamon's renowned writing-skin production. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
