The Temple of Artemis-Selçuk

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, near modern Selcuk, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. First built around 550 BC and funded by Croesus of Lydia, it was burned by Herostratus in 356 BC and rebuilt before its final destruction in 401 AD. The Greek poet Antipater of Sidon declared that its grandeur made all other wonders lose their brilliance. Rediscovered in 1869 by an expedition led by John Turtle Wood for the British Museum, today only a single reconstructed column marks the site.
