The Pergamon amphitheatre is a Roman-era structure built in the 2nd century AD in the ancient city of Pergamon, near modern Bergama, Turkey. It could accommodate approximately 25,000 spectators. Most seats were simple steps carved from tufa, a cheap whitish volcanic stone, while premium VIP seats were crafted from costlier grayish-black andesite with high backs. Archaeologists uncovered inscribed seat blocks bearing spectator names -- some professionally chiseled by stonemasons to claim reserved seating, others crudely etched as informal reservations. The amphitheatre hosted gladiatorial combat, animal fights, and possibly naval battle reenactments.
