Belevi Mausoleum

The Belevi Mausoleum is a Hellenistic monumental tomb located 14 km northeast of Ephesus in western Turkey. Originally designed for Lysimachus, a general of Alexander the Great who died in 281 BC, it was later used to inter the Seleucid king Antiochus II Theos around 246 BC. The burial chamber has a square plan with sides measuring 29 metres and a height of 10 metres. An estimated 2,500 cubic metres of locally sourced marble were used in its construction. The second largest mausoleum in Anatolia after the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, its construction was never completed, though it would have reached approximately 35 metres in height.
