Miletus Ancient Theatre

The Theatre of Miletus in western Turkey was initially built around 300 BC as a Hellenistic theatre seating 5,300 spectators in a two-tiered cavea. Under Emperor Trajan (98-117 AD), it was radically enlarged to seat 15,000-18,500 with a third tier reaching approximately 40m in height. The Roman renovation added a three-story scaenae frons with seven doors and decorative reliefs. The cavea measures 139.8m in diameter with a semicircular orchestra of 27.3m. Since 2018, the University of Hamburg has directed ongoing excavations. The site appears on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List.
