Ancient City of Troy

Located at Hisarlik in northwestern Turkey, Troy is one of the world's most famous archaeological sites with 4,000 years of continuous habitation. Nine major occupation layers span from the Early Bronze Age (c. 3000 BC) through the Roman period. First excavated by Heinrich Schliemann in 1870, whose deep trench destroyed much evidence in his search for Homeric Troy. The mythic Trojan War city is typically identified with the Late Bronze Age layers (Troy VI/VIIa). UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.
