Margidunum

Margidunum was a Roman settlement on the Fosse Way near present-day Bingham in Nottinghamshire, England, now a protected Scheduled Monument. Initially a military post around 55-60 AD, a civilian settlement developed by 70-80 AD along a 1 km stretch of road. A rhomboid earthwork defense was built in the late 2nd century enclosing about 6.5 acres, with six ditches spanning 50-60 yards wide and a stone wall nearly 3 metres thick. A 1970 sewer project revealed over 100 Roman features including two lead coffins. The site remained occupied until about 500 AD.
