Ancaster, Lincolnshire

A Roman settlement in Lincolnshire, England, possibly ancient Causennae, at the junction of Ermine Street and King Street. A Claudian auxiliary fort was built here shortly after 43 AD and abandoned by around 80 AD, after which a civilian settlement developed. Stone defenses were added around 200 AD enclosing approximately 10 acres. Notable finds include sculptures of the three Matres goddesses, a dedication to the god Viridios, and a cemetery of over 300 late Roman burials.
