Newport Arch

A 3rd-century Roman gate in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, serving as the north gate of Lindum Colonia and carrying Ermine Street northward toward York. The original structure featured a central carriageway flanked by two pedestrian arches and semi-circular towers, rising to 26 ft above ground level. It is the oldest arch in Britain still used by daily traffic, a Scheduled Monument and Grade I listed building. In 1964, a lorry struck the arch, causing the crown to collapse, requiring almost the entire arch ring to be reconstructed between May and August of that year.
