The Temple of Apollo at Didyma (the Didymaion) was the fourth largest temple in the ancient Greek world, located 11 miles south of Miletus in modern Turkey. Home to an oracle second only to Delphi, the original 6th-century BC temple was destroyed by the Persians in 494 BC. Alexander the Great commissioned a colossal replacement c. 300 BC featuring 124 columns on a platform of over 5,500 square metres, with walls nearly 28 metres high. Construction continued for centuries but was never completed. The oracle was officially closed in 385 AD.
