A Roman arched gateway from the 2nd century CE, the sole surviving fragment of the city walls of ancient Mylasa (modern Milas, Turkey). Known as the "Axe Gate," it bears a carved double-headed axe (labrys) on its keystone, a sacred symbol of the Carian deity Zeus Labraundos, with both blades featuring carved eyes interpreted as Zeus's gaze toward his sanctuary at Labraunda. Built of fine white marble blocks, the gate stood on the route of the Zeus Labrandos Festival procession and may also have supported an aqueduct.
