Stratonikeia Ancient City

Stratonikeia is one of the most important ancient city-states in inner Caria, located near Yatagan in Mugla Province, Turkey. Inhabited continuously from the Late Bronze Age (c. 1500 BC) to the present, it was known as Atriya in the Hittite period and renamed by Seleucid king Antiochus I after his wife Stratonike in the 3rd century BC. The site preserves a Roman bath, a monumental Northern City Gate on the sacred road from Lagina, and the largest known gymnasion in ancient Anatolia. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
