Oppidum Zürich-Lindenhof

A fortified Celtic oppidum founded by the Helvetii tribe on a moraine hill overlooking the Limmat river in Zurich, dating to c. 150-50 BC. Archaeological campaigns in 1989, 1997, 2004 and 2007 uncovered ramparts, iron tools, coins dated 120-50 BC, and imported amphorae reflecting La Tene culture trade networks. The Romans integrated the settlement around 15 BC, establishing Turicum. Emperor Valentinian I later built a 4,500-square-metre citadel with 10 towers on the hilltop around 364-375 AD. The site is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
