Centum Prata

Centum Prata is a Roman vicus founded around 50 AD on the eastern shore of Lake Zurich in Kempraten, municipality of Rapperswil-Jona, canton of St. Gallen. It is the most important Gallo-Roman archaeological site in the canton. The settlement grew at the intersection of roads between Turicum (Zurich) and Vitudurum (Winterthur), spanning roughly 300 by 200 metres along the lakeshore. Excavations have revealed temple remains, a pottery workshop, and residential buildings. In 2015, a Mithraeum (temple to the god Mithras) was unexpectedly discovered during excavations near the vicus. The site is listed as a Class A object of national importance in the Swiss inventory of cultural property.
