Oppidum Uetliberg

Oppidum Uetliberg was a La Tene era Celtic fortification near the summit of Uetliberg hill in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland, dating to the 5th century BC (late Hallstatt/early La Tene period). One of the most important Iron Age fortifications in Switzerland, it featured walls up to 14m high and 35m wide enclosing a large settlement with two inner defensive rings. The hilltop was settled from at least the Neolithic period, with the oldest artifacts dating to around 4000 BC among some 60,000 total finds. The fortifications remained in use for over four centuries until the Roman conquest in the 1st century BC. Early excavations were conducted in the 1830s and 1860s.
