Roman Villa of Vale do Mouro

A large Roman settlement in Coriscada, Meda, covering approximately 2 hectares, one of the largest villas in Portugal. The site shows Neolithic origins with silica and quartz flakes, followed by Roman occupation from the 3rd to 4th centuries AD. Excavations beginning in 2000 uncovered a baths complex, a mosaic panel rare for inland Portugal, and in 2007 a remarkable treasure trove of approximately 5,000 coins. The ornate mosaics and rich artifacts challenge the assumption that isolated rural Roman settlements were impoverished. Finds are displayed at the Coriscada Sociocultural Center.
