Castro of Monte Mozinho

The Castro of Monte Mozinho, known as the "Dead City," is a fortified settlement in Oldro~es, Penafiel, Porto district, and the largest Roman castro in the Iberian Peninsula at 20 hectares. Enclosed by four wall lines up to 3.5 m thick, it was founded between the late 1st century BC and early 1st century AD and occupied until the 5th century. Pre-Roman Celtic origins are evidenced by Gallaeci warrior statues. Dwellings are circular "courtyard houses" organized along north-south axes. Excavations beginning in 1943 and resumed in 1974 uncovered coins, ceramics, glass, weapons, agricultural tools, and jewelry. An interpretive center opened in 2004.
