Citania de Briteiros is an Iron Age hillfort of the Castro culture on Monte de Sao Romao, about 15 km northwest of Guimaraes, Portugal. Covering roughly 50 acres, it housed over 1,000 people between c. 200 BC and AD 300, with an urban layout of approximately 150 stone huts arranged in a rough grid pattern connected by paved paths and served by a water distribution system. Portuguese archaeologist Francisco Martins Sarmento began excavations in 1874, pioneering preservation methods and uncovering the acropolis, bathhouse, and cremation furnace. The settlement was defeated and occupied by the Romans in the 1st century AD under Augustus and Tiberius, and saw a brief medieval reoccupation with chapel construction.
