Castro of Cidadelhe

The Castro of Cidadelhe is a fortified settlement in Mesao Frio, Vila Real district, Portugal, with proto-historic origins and subsequent Roman and Medieval occupation. Founded as a metallurgical settlement during the Late Bronze Age (8th-9th century BC), it was destroyed and later reoccupied during the Castro culture period. The site features five concentric defensive wall circuits adapted to the terrain. Known historically as Civitadella, it was destroyed in 134 BC by Roman forces. A medieval quadrangular tower from the 10th century stands in the acropolis area. The Roman military road from Braga to Amarante passed through the parish, and traces of Roman presence include a stretch of paved road and the Martinhos Bridge.
