Roman Ruins of São Cucufate

The Roman Ruins of Sao Cucufate are one of the most important Roman remains in Portugal, located in Vila de Frades in the municipality of Vidigueira in the southern Alentejo. Considered the largest Roman villa in Portugal, its unique "aulica villa" typology stands out for its verticality and monumentality, with multi-story construction featuring terraces, a swimming pool, Roman baths, and evidence of wine production dating back 2,000 years. A medieval convent was established on the ruins around the 9th century, lasting until the late 12th century, with Christian frescoes still visible on the walls.
