Menhirs of Lavajo

A group of menhirs in the parish of Alcoutim e Pereiro, Algarve, Portugal, likely erected during the second half of the 4th millennium BC. The largest stands over 3 metres tall and is carved from greywacke, a dark grey stone with a brown patinated surface, making it the largest example of greywacke menhirs known in Portugal. The menhirs have a star-like appearance with an ellipsoidal cross-section and are engraved with circles and dimples. Discovered in 1992, a recovery project later restored and re-erected the stones in their original cavities.
