Castro of Vieito

The Castro of Vieito is a Castro culture settlement on the right bank of the Lima River estuary in Perre, Viana do Castelo, Portugal. Occupied for roughly a century during initial Romanization (late 1st century BC to mid-1st century AD), the small fortified site had two defensive walls reinforced by a moat on the north side and a tower. Despite its modest size, significant external contacts are evidenced by large quantities of imported amphorae. The site was discovered during construction of the A28 motorway, prompting emergency excavations from 2004-2005 that covered 15,000 square metres, yielding 14 tonnes of ceramics and over 1,000 lithic artifacts. An interpretation center was later established in partnership with the University of Coimbra.
