Mawk'allaqta, Sandia

Mawk'allaqta (also Mawk'a Llaqta) is an archaeological settlement in the Puno Region of southeastern Peru, located in the Sandia Province within the Sandia District. Dating to the Late Horizon period (1000-1500 AD), the site represents an important example of pre-Columbian Andean architecture in the highland region. The settlement features characteristic Inka-influenced stone construction and was strategically positioned to control trade routes in the Sandia valley. In recognition of its historical and cultural significance, Mawk'allaqta was declared a National Cultural Heritage (Patrimonio Cultural) of Peru by the National Institute of Culture, protecting its ruins and archaeological remains for future study.
