Kohunlich

Kohunlich is a large Maya archaeological site in Quintana Roo, Mexico, spanning 21 acres of dense subtropical rainforest with nearly 200 largely unexcavated mounds. First reported by Raymond Merwin in 1912, the site was occupied from around 200 BC through the 12th century AD. It is best known for its Temple of the Masks, an Early Classic pyramid built around 500 AD, featuring massive stucco masks of the Sun God Kinich Ahau standing 2.5 meters tall flanking the central stairway. The site also demonstrates sophisticated hydraulic engineering, with 90,000 of its 210,000 square meters cut to channel rainwater into a reservoir.
