An ancient Maya city in Yucatan, Mexico, continuously inhabited since about 700 BC, covering a minimal urban area of 53 sq km. It is thought to contain the largest pyramid by volume on the Yucatan Peninsula. The dominant Kinich Kak Moo pyramid measures nearly 600 feet square at the base and exceeds 34 m in height, built between 400-600 AD atop a sacred cave. The Spanish erected the Convent of San Antonio de Padua within its ceremonial center in 1549, overlaying the Maya structures. Izamal is on Mexico's UNESCO Tentative List.
