Xtojil Cenote

Xtojil Cenote is a small Maya settlement near Libre Union in Yucatan, Mexico, approximately 20 km from Chichen Itza. Archaeological excavations uncovered a dozen Maya burial sites dating to 600-800 AD, with tombs in lithic cistas containing around 30 ceramic pieces, including two with hieroglyphic inscriptions. The cenote walls display elaborate carved scenes including a ballcourt athlete with goal ring, sacrifice depictions, and figures supporting tables. Traces of buildings beside the cenote indicate a wider settlement associated with the sacred water source.
