Torre del Greco

Torre del Greco is a coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Italy, situated on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius between Herculaneum and Pompeii. In Roman times it served as a suburb of Herculaneum, with patrician villas lining the coast. The most significant archaeological site is Villa Sora, a grand residence constructed in the mid-1st century BC that stretched nearly 500 feet along the Bay of Naples before being buried by Vesuvius in AD 79. Recent excavations uncovered rooms with black and red frescoes depicting herons, griffins, and a centaur. The area falls within the UNESCO buffer zone for Pompeii and Herculaneum.
