Ur

Ur was a major Sumerian city-state in ancient Mesopotamia, located at modern Tell el-Muqayyar in Dhi Qar Governorate, Iraq[1]. Originally a coastal city near the Euphrates' mouth on the Persian Gulf, coastline shifts have left it inland on the Euphrates' south bank, 16 km southwest of Nasiriyah[1]. The settlement dates to the Ubaid period c. 3800 BC, appearing in written history as a city-state from the 26th century BC with its first recorded king, Mesannepada[1]. Uruk lies 93 km northwest of ancient Ur, 108 km southeast of ancient Nippur, and 24 km northwest of ancient Larsa[1].
